What are Add ins?

Add ins are free mini software applications that aren’t pre installed into Excel but which can be uploaded with a few button clicks. Most finance teams don’t know about them; which is a shame because some of them will make staff mind blowingly efficient. At FDTC we look at three of the most useful and powerful. 

PowerQuery Power Query Get Data and Transform

PowerQuery

Now known as Get Data and Transform, this beauty allows you to automate repetitive cleaning and formatting of datasets. Any cleaning Excel can do, PowerQuery can do and more besides, so just dictate the task order once and you’ll never need to again.  Use it quite literally take back weeks  from your annual workload.

PowerPivot Power Pivot

Powerpivot

Eliminates all the problems of pivot tables including only being able to run a pivot table from a single dataset, not being able to create complex calculations in pivot tables and hefty data usage. If you don’t fancy Power BI then use Powerpivot which has virtually the same analytical capabilities.

Lightbulb moment

Solver

Got an end number, but not sure what inputs you need to get to that number? Goal seek might be the answer but if the problem is more complex then Solver is definitely worth learning. Take all the time and effort out of supplier, customer and bank statement recs or maybe even advanced budgeting?

PowerQuery (Get Data and Transform)

If you've got Excel, you've got PowerQuery. EVERY task we perform in finance teams from budgeting to posting journals, involves taking information from multiple sources, cleaning it, formatting it and then joining it together. Yuk. Up until now it was totally necessary and now with PowerQuery it's totally unnecessasry. Find out about PowerQuery here to reduce this process to zero!

PowerBI

PowerBI is a revolutionary reporting tool created by Microsoft and if your Finance team has Office 365 chances are you already have it. With Power BI you can: - Take data from multiple sources to create beautiful custom dynamic reports
- Restrict access to individual users or user groups
- With some datasources - create live reports
- Eliminate the need for sharing reports through emails or shared drives. An app and an internet connection is enough.
